Combat Series 2 - Loose Ladder
The second offensive Tesuji In James Davies group 'Tesuj' covers loose ladders. The fundamental setup seems to be cutting stones with 2 liberties with close support so standard attacks will not work.
Here is the suggested setup with one of the more interesting (as in more ways to muck it up) problems
Note the X marks the available libeties of the Black Group and White needs the support of the triangled section. Also not the single Black stone at the top if what prevents a normal ladder working because of
The likely situation is the white 4 stones on the right get killed (though that's not guaranteed).
Now the loose ladder itself has to be careful that it does not allow its opponent to get a forced double atari which can happen after the 3rd bend. So if White was nervous about the bottom right group and tries to steer black away as follows they actually lose the lot
Again it is Blacks 2 liberties that gives them the ability to attack with that double atari.
Equally if White forces Black to close to the bottom group then disaster also ensues
Depending on board placement black could at this point switch and push out at the cost of permitting white at the bottom to live
You'll note White cannot play 11 where 12 currently is as that allows Black to drop below and kill the bottom right.
If you want to play with the options the replay is here (on a 13 13 board)
