Nyu Eiko - Nagoya Co-Captain
Nagoya's Co-Captain is the interesting 4 Dan Eiko Nyu (牛 栄子 ), born 12th May 1999 in Chiba she is a 26 year old daughter of a Chinese master Go Player (4 times national champion no less) and a Chinese 5 Dan Professional who also was an assistant to the famous Japanese Go Player 'Go Seigen' (assistant isn't the right word, she helped edit his books and other such things). The mother's sister is another 5 Dan Professional who is married to 9 Dan Professional Michael Redmond so Nyu is his neice. She was around Seigen from the age of 5 so had an almost unique GO upbringing in that regard. From everything I have read Seigen and his wife were very fond of her as well. She became a Professional in 2015 at 16 and has proved herself a talented player in her own right and is possibly one of the brightest starts of a new wave of Japanese female players.
Her play style is unusually balanced in that she adapts to the player and situation as opposed to appearing to favour a play style of her own. This makes her very difficult to prepare against as she is extremely good at reacting to what is in front of her thus making games very unpredictable.
It also means that as she gains experience and high level play her understanding of all play styles will increase as she doesn't favour any one of them which could make her exceptionally deadly as a player when she masters them. This is in comparison with a player who, say, focuses on Territory and attempts to master that and the ways that is handled. That player could be forced into a play style they don't like and not handle it as well. Nyu though should have no such difficulties.
As of today her ELO is 3023 making her the #472nd best player in the world with an interesting chart.
She shot up to the heights of 3060 post pandemic but has a drop since. In this league last year she was in the Senko team and her excellent set of results in 7 wins and only 2 losses was one of the reasons Senko was the best team in the pool section.
It will be fascinating to watch her games.
Nyu has also started to breach finals of major tourneys.
Saikyo
7th beat Nakamura Sumire
8th beat Ueno Asami
Honinbo
24th lost to Fujisawa Rina 2-3
Kisei (Blitz)
20th lost to Xie Yimin 1-2
First up you can see wins against very strong opponents (the number 1 and number 3 women in Japan currently) and the losses against the current number 2 and the ex number 1 but those losses being hard fought and not dominations. The Kisei was also in 2017 when when she had only been a Professional just under 2 years and was still a teenager.
Here is her X fluff piece. Her choice of a knife for protection is stuck on a desert island indicates a somewhat feisty personality..
